Developers evict historic women’s shelter to build luxury hotel:

For more than a century, the Anna Louise Inn provided housing for women fleeing abusive relationships, recovering from drug and alcohol addiction or escaping forced sex work. This month, the historic Cincinnati safe house gave up a two-year legal battle against a Fortune 500 insurance company looking to buy the building and convert it into a luxury hotel.

We really appreciate the national media picking up this story now that it’s too late.

Self-described human rights scholars are so entrenched in violently racist ideology that they can spend over two thousand words justifying war crimes without a mention of victims of those crimes. People whose job it is to teach the concept of human rights in this country’s most prestigious universities are unable to imagine a scenario in which the US government is not killing thousands upon thousands of Muslims.

In other words, I like drones because I don’t want to stop people from dying, I just want to get angry about war without criticizing soldiers.

In other words, people should only be told about drone strikes after they have happened, so they can get upset about them but can’t stop them.

At the risk of sounding naive, I was hoping that at least one of Mayor Emanuel’s school board appointees might take a break from voting to close 50 schools and mention the $55 million the mayor wants to spend on his near-south-side hotel and basketball arena.
As you know, the board voted yesterday to close those schools on the grounds that the system’s too broke to keep them open.

And yet the school system’s not so broke it can’t afford to contribute about $28 million of the $55 million in property tax dollars that Mayor Rahm wants to spend on the hotel and DePaul basketball arena.

It’s even worse. The hotel/b-ball arena project will wind up costing the schools money. Because by buying the land, Mayor Emanuel will make it tax exempt, and the schools will no longer be able to tax it.

So they’ll have to raise the taxes on everyone else’s property to compensate. Lucky us!

When I moved in the city I went to a totally new spot. A little change in scenery might do ya good. My current place is spensive but its quiet and I don’t deal with neighbors above me letting their dog pee from their balcony onto my patio.
